Key Takeaways

The cost of an allergy test without insurance can range from $100 to $1,500, depending on the number of allergens tested, the type of tests conducted, and the location. Allergy tests cost less with insurance (between $20 and $300) if you have met your yearly deductible and premiums.

What are Allergy Tests?

Allergy tests are medical procedures used to identify allergens responsible for triggering allergy symptoms. (1) These tests could help your allergists or health care provider recommend the right medication or treatment plan for you or advise you on allergens to avoid.

Allergy tests can be done to identify common allergens, such as:

  • Plant pollens

  • Pet allergens (dog, cat, or horse dander)

  • Molds

  • Tree Pollen

  • Grass and ragweed

  • Dust mites

Allergy Testing Cost With Insurance

The cost of allergy tests with insurance typically ranges from $20 to $100 after you have met your deductibles. (4) However, some patients with insurance have reported paying more than $300 for allergy tests.  In recent years, patient costs for allergy testing have been on the rise due to higher deductibles and the requirement for pre-authorizations.

The exact costs may depend on the type of tests, location,  the number of allergens you are testing for, and your insurance coverage. In general, blood tests cost more than skin tests, depending on the tests performed. (1)

To get a clearer picture of how much you would pay for an allergy test, be sure to ask your insurance provider what types of allergy testing your plan covers, as well as any pre-authorization requirements for specific tests. Ensure that your chosen clinic is in-network to avoid paying more out of pocket.

Allergy Testing Cost Without Insurance

The cost of allergy tests without insurance can range from $200 to $ 1,500 or more, depending on the location, allergy clinic, or test type. For example, some skin allergy tests can cost between $60 and $300, while blood allergy tests can cost about $200 to $1000 without insurance.

The number of allergens you are testing for can also greatly affect how much you pay. For example, skin allergy testing for four allergens costs around $100 at $25 per allergen; testing for 20 allergens will cost about $500 on average. You may also have to factor in consultation fees, which can vary depending on if you are seeing a general practitioner or a specialist..

If you are looking for a more convenient option, you may try at-home allergy tests. An at-home allergy test kit can cost up to  $300.

Types of Allergy Testing

Allergy testing can be expensive, depending on the type of tests you want, how severe your allergic reaction is, and how many allergens you are tested for.

Common allergy tests include: (3)

Skin prick tests

This test is relatively simple, although it can be painful and may not be tolerated by all patients.  A skin test also carries a small risk of anaphylactic reaction.  Skin tests can take between 30 and 90 minutes and the results are immediate.

For this test, an allergist will use a multitest tool to administer small concentrations of  antigens directly on your skin.  The multitest tool pricks your skin during the application to allow the allergens to be absorbed. If you are allergic, your skin will react by changing color and become inflamed. .

Skin prick tests are generally accurate but can give false results in patients on certain medications, including histamines, or in people with existing skin irritations at the testing site.

Intradermal skin tests

This is usually done when the prick test is inconclusive or the recommended treatment method requires more precise results, usually in the case of allergy shots.  For this test, an allergist will insert an small dose of the diluted antigen allergen solution under your skin to see how you react. These reactions are measured in size to determine the severity of reaction for each allergen tested. Intradermal skin tests check for allergies to medications and insect stings.

Blood Draw IgE tests

This test looks for the presence of IgE antibodies, which are higher in the blood of people with allergies. While medicines do not affect the accuracy of blood tests, results often take longer to come back.

Patients go to a blood draw lab and can expect results in 1-3 weeks after the test has been submitted.  Patients schedule a follow-up appointment with their allergy care provider to go over the results.

Blood Spot IgE tests

Quello offers free blood allergy tests to determine which allergens trigger your symptoms most.  An allergy test kit is sent to your house, and patients use a lancet to prick their finger and fill in a blood collection card with four drops of blood.  The sample is then mailed using a prepaid waterproof envelope to the lab, where the results are processed and the report is created.  Patients have a telemedical appointment with a Quello provider to review results and possible treatment options.
