Key Takeaways
Using a nasal spray correctly can make all the difference in how effectively your allergy medicine manages your symptoms.
The right nasal spray technique can deposit your allergy medication in the right place, which is often directly on the lining of your nasal passages, so that you can reap the maximum benefit. (1,2)
Quello is committed to helping allergy sufferers achieve lasting allergy relief. In this article, we will explain how to use an allergy nasal spray correctly to get the most from your treatment.

Step 1: Blow your Nose

Gently blow your nose to remove any mucus and help the medicine enter your nasal passages more easily.

Step 2: Prime or shake depending on the type of nasal spray

If you are using a pump spray for the first time, prime it by spraying a few times into the air until a fine mist forms.
If you are using a pressurized canister, make sure it is securely inserted into its holder and, if instructed, shake before use.

Step 3: Position your Head Correctly

If you are using a pump spray, slightly tilt your head forward and breathe out slowly. If you are using a canister, keep yourself upright, and then breathe out slowly.
Avoid tilting your head back to prevent the medication from running down your throat rather than staying in your nose.

Step 4: Position your Hands Correctly

If you are using a pump spray, hold the bottle with your thumb at the bottom, and your index and middle fingers on top. Use your other hand to close the side not receiving the medicine. It may help to use the right hand when spraying the left nostril and vice versa.
Similarly, for the pressurized canister, place your thumb underneath and your index or middle finger on top.

Step 5: Release

Squeeze the pump or press down the canister while breathing slowly through your nose, and do the same for the other nose.
Regardless of the type, always aim the spray nozzle away from the middle of your nose so it doesn’t get into your nasal septum (the cartilage separating the two sides of your nose), as it could cause side effects.

Step 6: Aftercare

Do not blow your nose immediately after using your nasal spray. Wait for at least 15 minutes after using the nose. If you need to exhale, do so through your mouth.

Other Helpful Tips for Using an Allergy Nasal Spray

  • Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions or the product instructions, as each allergy nasal spray may be different.
  • You may not always need to inhale; ask your healthcare provider or follow your product manual to see what’s recommended.
  • Do not insert your nasal spray too far into your nose. Instead, insert the spray tip just ¼ to ½ inch into your nose.
  • To ensure the spray reaches the back of your nose, point it away from the center of your nose and more toward your ear.
  • For ease of use, hold your spray in your left hand when applying to the right nostril and vice versa.

Most nasal sprays for allergies may provide immediate allergy relief, but they do not address the underlying cause of allergies.

Unfortunately, because allergies persist as long as you're exposed to the trigger, symptoms often return once the effects of a nasal spray wear off.

At Quello, our allergy specialists have decades of experience treating allergies. That's why we formulated allergy drops designed to address the immune response behind allergic disease.

Our approach to allergy treatment is based on allergen immunotherapy, which works by gradually training the immune system to become less reactive to allergens.

Most of our patients report experiencing fewer allergy symptoms and less severe allergy reactions after completing treatment, with some noticing significant relief as early as 6 months.
