What is Sublingual Immunotherapy?
Sublingual immunotherapy uses allergy drops or tablets under the tongue to reduce symptoms and provide long-term allergy relief. Learn how allergy shots work, the benefits of using them and how they differ from allergy shots (subcutaneous immunotherapy).
Sublingual immunotherapy, also referred to as SLIT, is a type of allergy treatment that involves placing allergen extracts under the tongue to train your immune system to react less to this allergen over time. (1)
Each person responds differently to allergens, so sublingual immunotherapy needs to be prepared for each individual allergy sufferer. (2)
Quello uses high-quality, FDA-approved allergen extracts to create personalized SLIT treatments tailored to your needs.
There are two types of sublingual immunotherapy: Allergy tablets and Allergy shots. Both can be conveniently taken at home and do not require frequent hospital visits.
How Sublingual Immunotherapy Works
Sublingual immunotherapy works by retraining your immune system to respond better to allergens, which helps reduce your allergic symptoms and, over time, achieve allergy freedom.
This form of immunotherapy uses a small, purified amount of the substance you are allergic to to help your body become less sensitive to it

Usually, when you are exposed to moderate or large amounts of something you are allergic to, for example, pollen, your immune system will try to fight it off or expel it from the body. This is what causes allergy symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes, and nasal congestion.
However, when these allergens are introduced in small, purified but gradually increasing doses, your immune system begins to recognize them as harmless. Over time, it becomes more tolerant, so you experience fewer or less severe symptoms, even when exposed to larger amounts.
Before you get started on SLIT, an allergist will first recommend allergy testing to confirm what allergens you are most sensitive to. Once this is known, an allergy drop or tablet will be personally designed for you.
Quello offers a free allergy test to find out your major allergy triggers.

-
Have severe, uncontrolled asthma
If you have sores, your allergist or allergy provider will tell you when to resume taking the drops or tablet when your mouth has healed.
How do I take sublingual immunotherapy?
To use allergy drops or tablets for sustained relief, all you need to do is place the designated number of drops or tablets under your tongue and hold them there for a few minutes (one or two) before swallowing. Repeat and increase the number of drops as recommended by the allergy provider.
Avoid eating immediately after taking SLIT, as the drops or tablets need a few minutes to be absorbed and start working. It is recommended to wait at least 10 minutes before eating or drinking.

How successful is SLIT
Sublingual immunotherapy has been found to be very effective in treating seasonal, pet, and indoor (dust-mite) allergies. In some studies, up to 80% of patients report a significant reduction in allergy symptoms. (4) However, keep in mind that how successful an allergy drop is can vary from person to person, and the quality of the extract used in the drop.
Over 90% of patients who use Quello drops reported fewer allergy symptoms after 1 year, and over 60% have been allergy-free for more than 5 years.
