How Sublingual Immunotherapy Works

Sublingual Immunotherapy Side Effects

• Swelling of the tongue or lips

• Nausea

Who should avoid SLIT?

Do not use sublingual immunotherapy if you:

• Open sores or cuts in your mouth

• Mouth ulcers

• Undergoing dental procedures that cause bleeding, such as tooth extraction and oral surgery.

• Have severe, uncontrolled asthma

If you have sores, your allergist or allergy provider will tell you when to resume taking the drops or tablet when your mouth has healed.

How do I take sublingual immunotherapy?

To use allergy drops or tablets for sustained relief, all you need to do is place the designated number of drops or tablets under your tongue and hold them there for a few minutes (one or two) before swallowing. Repeat and increase the number of drops as recommended by the allergy provider.

Avoid eating immediately after taking SLIT, as the drops or tablets need a few minutes to be absorbed and start working. It is recommended to wait at least 10 minutes before eating or drinking.

Sublingual immunotherapy has been found to be very effective in treating seasonal, pet, and indoor (dust-mite) allergies.
